Engineer Ugo Ozuah Was Allegedly Shot Dead By Unidentified Police Men

On saturday 15th of September 2012, Ugo said goodbye to bachelorhood by walking down the aisle with his fiancee Joan. The couple exchanged their vows at TREM in gbagada and a colorful reception followed at Chevron recreation center, Ifako. Frends and family came from far and wide to rejoice with the couple who were starting a new phase in their lives, one of whom is Ugo’s friend who was present at the time of his untimely death.
The couple didn’t travel for their honeymoon, because Ugo’s wife was given two days off work, and had resumed by Wednesday the following week. On Thursday, a very close friend who had flown in from the UK for their wedding came to visit at their Oke-lowo estate home in Gbagada. By the time he wanted to leave, it was late, and Ugo couldn’t drive him home. As a result,  he decided to drive to the junction where they could easily hail a cab.
On getting to the junction of redemption street at Gbagada(same street that has Zenon, and UPS at the back), Ugo is said to have parked his CRV jeep, and was about to alight, with his friend. Suddenly, his friend in the car said he heard the statement “Who goes there?”, which was immediately followed by two gunshots. As a result all around including the friend fell to the ground out of fear. However, before he fell to the ground, he was able to see that the assailant, with two other men who were together were clad in police uniform.
A few minutes passed, before he summoned the courage to go to the driver’s side, and saw that Ugo had been shot point blank in the chest twice. He then went back to Ugo’s home to inform people of what had happened. On getting back to the scene of the incident, a crowd including police men had gathered, yet the police men instead of first making an instant effort to take Ugo to the nearest hospital were met delibrating with others about the situation. Ugo’s friend on seeing  police men present, voiced out that it was members of the police force that allegedly shot Ugo. It is said that the police men appeared shocked and argued that Policemen couldn’t have shot Ugo, particularly when he was neither a criminal nor was he resisting arrest. All the while no attempt had still being made to take Ugo to the hospital.
It was his wife while the argument was ongoing that insisted that he be taken to the hospital, as the argument wasn’t leading anywhere. Ugo was then taken to LASUTH, the general hospital at Ikeja(i don’t understand why  the police elected to go that far when Gbagada general hospital wasn’t far off), while his friend went to the police station at gbagada to write his statement, before going back to the hospital to join Ugo’s wife and family. Unfortunately, around 12:30 am on friday 21st September 2012, Ugo Ozuah, married only for four days, was declared dead.
Since the incident happened, the police has refuted all allegations by the eye witness that Ugo was killed by men of the police force. When an autopsy was requested, the family was asked to get a particular form from the police before it could be carried out. On getting to the police, the police insisted that Ugo’s friend who was with him at the time of the incident come in to write a statement. The family found this confusing, as a statement had been initially written by the friend(as I mentioned earlier) on the night of the incident. So what happened to his initial statement? The question remains unanswered.
Ugo a native of Abia state who was in his early 30’s is described by friends as a jolly good fellow who lightens up a room with his charismatic persona, and presence. An alumnus of King’s college and University of Ado Ekiti, Engineer Ugo is described as the go to person, who knows something about everything.  His friends and family are still yet to come term with his sudden demise, as he was so full life and only just started his own engineering business a couple of months ago.
With the only eye witness present insisting that Ugo was shot by police men and the police denying the allegations saying that they could have been imposters, one can only pray that this matter is thoroughly investigated, and justice done to the person(s) responsible for Ugo’s death.
This is not the first time in recent time that INNOCENT CITIZENS have being allegedly killed by police men for no reason at all. I hope effort is being made to cub the excesses of some members of the police force who instead of protecting the populace have taken it upon themselves to reduce their number.
I really sympathize with the family, and implore anyone who might have more information that will help the investigation to come forward.
