Poetry: Words Are All I Have

Angry.
Betrayed.
Confused.
Drained.
Like autumn’s forgotten leaf
Like the proverbial lost sheep
Like the only spot of dark
In a spotless sea of sweetness and light

I stand on this pedestal,
Employing mediocre metaphors to mimic my maudlin maundering
Whelmed by the jeers in my head
The voices that cheer on my dread

Afraid.
Broken.
Cheerless.
Desolate.
My words are all I have
My thoughts are too dark for the light
My heart is too light for the dark
My words are all they’ll take

So I throw out another barrage
I’ll build a fort, impenetrable and strong
Willing woe on wanton witless waifs with weakly worded warheads
Praying that my game is not caught
Hoping that my act is not discovered

Dejected
Regretful
Crestfallen
And woeful
The feelings pour out in a never ending stream
Crippling and strengthening, reviving and killing
The thirst for assailance; repressed
The need for peace; compressed

Control is lost over and again
The words come flying out in a garbled string
Still wilting, maiming, eliminating
Control is lost; the words now live

My words are all I have
My thoughts are too dark for the light
My heart is too light for the dark
My words are all they’ll take
