Lawmaker Urges Government To Reduce Expenses

National-Assembly-504x285-420x238Rep. Olusegun Odebunmi (Oyo-PDP), Chairman of House of Representatives Committee on Information, National Orientation, Ethics and Values, on Friday, advised governments at all levels to reduce expenses in favour of development.

Odebunmi gave the advice in an interview with NAN in Abuja.

He said that prevailing economic situation had made it imperative for governments to be prudent and be able to provide essential services to the people.

“We are operating a mono-product economy; we are contemplating on diversifying our economy, but we cannot see the result of our diversification immediately.

“Then, how do we manage the present situation we find ourselves; it is just to cut the expenses of the government,” he said.

The lawmaker recalled that there was a bill on the floor of the House that had to do with the creation of commissions in some sectors of the economy, but that some lawmakers opposed it because government needed to reduce expenses.

“I think it is necessary for every state and the Federal Government to cut down on expenses so that all the necessary and essential services that government must provide will be carried out,” he said.

Odebunmi, therefore, called on Nigerians to contribute their quota to ensure that government succeeded, saying that the Bible, Quran made it clear that we must pray for our leaders.

According to him, Nigeria is our country and we have no other place to go and that is why we must contribute our quota to make it great.

“Forget about the party you belong to, the most important thing is contribute your quota to make sure Nigeria is among the leading countries in the world.

“If we fail to do it, the incoming generation will never forgive us as this is the right time for us to diversify our economy.

“A lot of things are there that Nigeria can do to provide employment,” he said.
