Ali Mustapha, a 17-year-old suspected Boko Haram member, yesterday narrates how he was forced to join the sect, operated in the recent deadly attacks carried out in Kala Balge Local Government Area of Borno State and how he killed 18 civilians.
According to ThisDay, Mustapha, who admitted being a member of the sect, told journalists in Maiduguri during his parade by the state Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ibrahim Abdullahi, that he participated in series of onslaughts against villagers by the terror group. He said in all the attacks, all he did was to kill people.
He said he belonged to the Mamman Nur – led faction of the group and was forced with many other boys to join the terrorist sect some three years ago when the sect attacked his village in Monguno.
He confessed ”I received extensive training and skills in the handling of assault weapons, especially AK 47 rifles, General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), Anti-Aircraft Gun (AAG), Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) among others, which I use for the attack on villagers”.
“I was forced to join Boko Haram about three years ago when Boko Haram insurgents came to our village and forcefully took many of us away. We were kept in the bush near Kala Balge and from there, we carried out various operations, during which I personally killed 18 persons.”
”I resolved to quit the group on my way to Maiduguri where I was directed to go and gather intelligence report on when troops and Civilian JTF, guarding the entrance of the city, are normally relaxing the intense security surveillance.
”I was tired of killing people against my wish, so I told two other colleagues of mine with whom we were asked to go on spying mission that we should abandon the mission and run away.Luck ran out of me me when I entered into the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp to look for my parents”.
”Unfortunately, some of the people in the camp recognised me as a member of the sect and quickly alerted the security operatives guarding the camp and was arrested by them”.
Mustapha revealed that his last task before he was arrested was to sneak into Maiduguri to spy for his group, as he normally did on the eve of any attack, before luck ran out of him.
