The Jay-Z and Will Smith backed musical about the legendary Afrobeat artist Fela Kuti has won over some hip hop’s top artists. ‘Fela!’ recently returned to Broadway where it will follow up its 2009 run with a number of shows before the curtains come down on the production on August 4th.
Busta Rhymes became the latest rapper to voice his support for the play which he says is both informative and entertaining. “The Fela play is unbelievable, mind blowing, and very informative and bone chilling. Most importantly, very entertaining, and I will be going to see it again before it leaves New York,” Busta Rhymes told AllHipHop.
Ahmir Questlove Thompson of The Roots has been a fan of the musical since its first run when he was invited by the producers to write a review of the show. “I witnessed a miracle tonight,” Questlove said after seeing the 2008 month long run of the musical.
Fela Kuti’s family recently unveiled plans for the annual Felabration festival which will be held in Nigeria’s largest city Lagos from October 15th and October 21st and Wale as well as Alicia Keys have been booked for the celebration alongside a number of Nigerian artists.
