Members of workers’ unions at the Osun State University on Monday staged a protest against the no-work-no-pay threat issued by the management of the university against the striking workers.

The protesting workers, who are members of the Non-Academic Staff Union and the National Association of Academic Technologists in the six campuses of the institution, described the no-work-no-pay threat as laughable.

The workers had embarked on an indefinite strike since last Wednesday, but the management of the university threatened to implement a no-work-no-pay policy to cow the workers.

The Chairman of NASU, Mr. Isaiah Fayemi, while addressing the workers, denied the claim by the management of the institution that the strike did not follow the procedure contained in the labour law.

According to him, the workers gave the management the required notice of strike, saying this made the strike legal.

He said, “It is unfortunate that the management, rather than seek ways to accede to the demands of the unions, is threatening not to pay members of staff their legitimate salary because of a legitimate industrial action they are participating in. UNIOSUN is the only institution in the whole South West that is not enjoying the hazard allowance. LASU, EKSU, TASUED and even LAUTECH that is co-owned by Osun and Oyo states “government are being faithful to this hazard allowance.”

The chairman of NAAT, Mr. Adeleke Ismaheel, stated that the workers would not suspend the strike until the management met their demands.

According to him, the workers are demanding for the implementation of the hazard allowance, arrears, overtime allowance and stoppage of special allowances for some selected workers. He added that the demands must be implemented before the strike would be called off.
