A 30-year-old man, Mr. Augustine Akpan, from Osuk Ntan village in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, has hacked a 65-year old woman, Mrs. Iquo Akpan to death with a machete.
It was learnt that the incident allegedly happened after Augustine’s sister, Ms Ani Akpan, was accused and later arrested for stealing cassava from Iquo farm.
Our correspondent learnt that Iquo had reported the incident to the village council who called in the police that arrested Ani.
It was gathered that Augustine became furious following the detention of his sister by the police.
One of the youth leaders in the village, Mr. Enek Udo, told our correspondent in Ibiono on Thursday that Augustine accused Iquo of masterminding the arrest of his sister.
He stated that on Sunday, Augustine went to Iquo’s residence and allegedly hacked her to death.
He said, “The woman (Ani) was handed over to the police by the village council after Iquo’s children reported that Ani went to her mother’s farm to steal some cassava.
“The woman (Iquo) did not go to any police station to effect the arrest of Ani. It was the council that did that.
“Augustine’s reason for killing the woman was that Iquo was the one who went to the village council to report the matter as well as arranged for the police to arrest his sister.”
Another resident, Ms Ini Ekong, also told PUNCH Metro that Ani was handed over to the police by the village council for justice.
She alleged that on Sunday morning Augustine went to Iquo house and cut her with the machete from the back before escaping the area with his brother Anietie Akpan to Ntan Mbat village.
“It was at Ntan Mbak village that the Osuk Ntan village council elders and youths went with the police to arrest them, that same Sunday, “ She added.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Akwa Ibom State Command, Mr. Etim Dickson, confirmed the murder.
He said, “The matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for investigation and prosecution.”
