Animals Are Better ~ Manny Pacquiao Blasts Gays

Manny-PacquiaoPhilippine boxing legend Manny Pacquiao has caused a storm following his remarks in a TV interview that homosexuals are “worse than animals”.

The eight-division world boxing champion turned politician has drawn the ire of gay Filipino celebrities and rights group with his politically incorrect stand.

Pacquiao, who is a member of the Phillipines House of Representatives and positions himself as a conservative Christian politician, is running for senate in the May elections.

In a clip posted online, the 36-year-old former champion tells the interviewer: “It’s common sense. Will you see any animals where male is to male and female is to female?

“The animals are better. They know how to distinguish male from female. If we approve [of] male on male, female on female, then man is worse than animals.”

He has since been condemned as a “hypocrite” and a “false prophet”, with local gay rights organisation Ladlad calling on voters to boycott Mr Pacquiao.

The group said in a statement that Pacquiao’s view “betrays a shallow understanding of sexual orientation and gender identity” and that failure to understand gay rights issues would leave him in the dark ages “when the cavemen ruled and the numbskulls roamed the Earth”.

Amid the uproar, the boxer appeared to beat a retreat with a writing on his Facebook page where he said he remained against gay marriage but was “not condemning LGBT”.

“God Bless you all and I’m praying for you,” he added.

But his Instagram post with a picture of his wife on Tuesday has muddied the waters even more:“I rather obey the Lord’s command than obeying the desires of the flesh. I’m not condemning anyone, but I’m just telling the truth of what the Bible says.”

The reactions on Twitter are predictable:

The furore has split the online world in the Catholic-dominated country, with many supporting the hugely popular Pacquiao whose rags to riches story continues to capture their imagination.
