Nigerian doctor in UK banned from practising medicine over fraudulent acts

A Nigerian gynecologist has been ordered to repay £75,620.73 within the next six months or go to prison, after being accused of fruad.

The accused, Dr Anthony Madu, 45, is reported to have been carrying out well-paid jobs in secret while on paid sick leave from another hospital.

Madu who is Nigerian born, was reportedly convicted on six counts of fraud, and was given a two-year suspended sentence back in 2014.

According to Daily Mail, the accused is reported to have been given an obstetrics and gynaecology registrar post at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, in August 2009 but was suspended and placed on extended leave two months later over the allegations that he had falsified his training record as well as his unsavory con duct towards other staff members.

Dr Madu reportedly began submitting sick notes in January 2010 on three different occasions, complaining that he could not work due to the level of stress he was facing at the hospital.

Unknown to the staff of te hospital where Madu worked, he went on to earn huge sums as a locum at four other hospitals in Manchester, Yorkshire and the Midlands.

Prosecutor, Christian Jowett, revealed to Cardiff Crown Court that accused, now living in Woolwich, London, allegedly transferred £95,000 to a bank account in Nigeria.

“He was legally obliged to tell his employers about his work but he did not.

“He was also legally obliged to tell two locum agencies he was on extended leave and had been granted sickness leave. But he continued to work and receive payment.”

The presiding Judge, David Wynn Morgan, disclosed that Madu will never be able to practise medicine in the UK again following his fraudulent actions.

Cheryl Hill, a counter-fraud specialist for the NHS, was reportedly satisfied with the prosecution, saying:

“This is a very satisfactory outcome. Dr Anthony Madu defrauded the NHS of money which should have been spent on patient care.”
