Four months after the release of his Disco Utopia EP, the 21-year old Zambian rapper and producer, who recently relocated from Johannesburg to Lagos and entered the Nigerian music scene when he produced Milli’s Don’t Ask Me What Happened tape earlier this year, is back with an anime inspired Single “Today Not Today”.
The track features bouncy bass thumps and tells the story of PatricKxxLee’s anime alter ego, who is “of the kind that controls the night and day” and wakes up with superpowers that let him double-jump over “m*therfu*king scums”, fly to Saturn and skip class in the superhero academy so he can take down haters that are in his way. It wouldn’t be a PatricKxxLee track though, if it wasn’t for the somber second verse, where his alter ego admits that he actually thrives off the haters.
With pop culture references to Super Saiyan 3 and an artwork that shows PatricKxxLee illustrated as a Dragonball Z anime, “Today Not Today” sees the rapper switching up the signature dark cinematic hip hop sounds of his previous projects “Disco Utopia” and “Red Hallway”.
As per his Tumblr blog, “Today Not Today” is PatricKxxLee’s last release ahead of his upcoming “Pentad Series”, an audio-visual cinematic hip hop and art project divided into five mixtapes to be released over several months early 2017.
