Fire raze Lagos markets destroying over 34 Shops, with properties worth millions lost


No fewer than 34 shops at Better Life Market in Makoko, Yaba and Mammy Market in Armed Forces Resettlement Barracks, Oshodi, Lagos have been ravaged by fire.


According to PUNCH Metro, fire broke out in one of the shops in the Mammy market at 1:30am and spread to other shops.
The fire was said to have been curtailed by men of the Lagos State Fire Service from the Isolo Fire Station.

Huge losses befell traders as groceries and provision stores were said to have been affected in the incident.
As the fire was put out around 3am, a distress call was said to have been received from residents around the Better Life Market in Makoko.

According to a resident, Tunde Adejare, over 20 shops containing food, clothes and other items were destroyed and the source of the fire was yet to be ascertained.

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Fire Service, Shakiru Amodu, confirmed the two incidents, adding that the agency would work with relevant authorities to ascertain the causes of the fire incidents.
