“I reached a point where I didn’t want to do a thing or go anywhere. I was crying constantly,” he explained.

After fans reached out to Johnson thanking him for speaking up about mental health, he responded on Twitter by thanking everyone and urging those going through a tough time to open up more.

During his chat, the Rock also spoke about a heartbreaking story from when he was a teenager. Months after he and his mother Ata were evicted from their apartment, he says she attempted suicide; he was just 15. “She got out of the car on Interstate 65 in Nashville and walked into oncoming traffic,” he explained. “I grabbed her and pulled her back on the gravel shoulder of the road.”

Johnson says even to this day, his mother doesn’t remember the incident. “She has no recollection of it whatsoever. Probably best she doesn’t.”

He added that if he didn’t find the strength to go on after his dreams of being a football player were dashed after a number of injuries, he would have come close to suicidal thoughts himself. “We both healed but we’ve always got to do our best to pay attention when other people are in pain. We have to help them through it and remind them they are not alone.”
