Spotify Set To Release Memory-Saving ‘Lite’ Version Of The App

Spotify wants to appeal to those starved for space on their phones. Unless you’re some big-shot who can afford to get the high-end iPhone models, chances are space on your cell phone is at a premium.

Between all the apps, photos, videos, and music, it’s easier than ever to fill up a phone’s memory, and even most Android phones nowadays don’t let you add your own storage.

Spotify wants to help with that. According to Billboard, Spotify is currently testing a new “Lite” version of their mobile app that would reduce the size of the app by 85%, from 100MB to just 15MB.

So far, the new version is only available to download in Brazil, but it promises to give you an expected Spotify experience for much less investment. A quote from the new version’s web store reads, “with Spotify Lite, you can play millions of songs, for free. The Spotify Lite app is small, so you’ll save space on your phone, and save data when using it on the go.”

That being said, all this convenient new storage space comes at a cost, with several features from the full app missing in the new version. Songs must be played on shuffle mode, even for premium subscribers, and there’s no option to listen to music offline, or connecting to other devices.

That might be too much to give up for most users, but the new version is still being tested, so it’s possible that some of these features will be added back in before the official launch of the new version.
