‘Ant-Man and The Wasp’ Becomes Marvel’s 20th No. 1 Opening With $76.5 Million Debut

Sunday box office reports are rolling in, and they say Ant-Man and The Wasp successfully snatched up $76.5 million domestically during its opening weekend, according to Variety.

Though that number may seem low in comparison to Marvel’s previous $100 million openings of 2018, it beats the original 2015 Ant-Man, which debuted at just $57 million.

The movie starring Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly took the top spot at the box office by a landslide, giving Marvel its third No. 1 film this year and its 20th straight No. 1 opening, as CNN notes.

Elsewhere in the world, Ant-Man secured $85 million, pushing its worldwide total to $161 million.

With Ant-Man and The Wasp ‘s success, Marvel Studios has made more than $17 billion worldwide over its 20 films.

In other box office news, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom secured the second spot at the box office and joined the billion-dollar club earlier this week.

It became the 35th film in history to do so, and the third this year following Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther.

Incredibles 2 maintained the No. 3 spot this weekend, and also crossed a major milestone by becoming the first animated film to pass $500 million at the North American box office.

It now boasts a global total of more than $700 million, and is the 12th film to ever make more than $500 million domestically.

The First Purge also debuted this past week, just a few days ahead of Ant-Man on the Fourth of July.

After five days in theaters, the Universal/Blumhouse production starring Insecure ’s Y’lan Noel made $31 million.
