Nigeria’s Tajudeen Agunbiade won silver at the 2018 China Open Para Table Tennis Championship in Beijing, which ended on Monday.
The competition is one of the qualifiers for the 2018 World Para Table Tennis Championships in Slovenia in October.
Agunbiade lost 3 -2 to Sweden’s Daniel Gustafsson in the final of the men ’s singles Class 9.
Agunbiade qualified for the world championships.
Four Nigerian players participated in the competition. They are Faith Obazuaye, Sule Bello, Agunbiade and Olufemi Alabi.
Obazuaye competed in the women’s singles Class 10 where she failed to qualify from the group stages after losing two matches and winning one. Bello competed in the men ’s singles Class 5 where he also failed to qualify from the group stages after losing three matches and Alabi competed in the men ’s singles Class 10 where he finished eighth after losing out in the quarter-finals.
Team coach Olufemi Odebode said the players gave their best in China.
“I commend Agunbiade because he put up a fantastic performance, he tried his best to win but unfortunately he was unlucky,” the coach said.
“The players gave their best and I am happy that they would have learnt some things at the competition. They need more exposure of this nature for them to be at their best.”
Nigeria participated only in the singles and not in the team events.
