India’s supreme court has struck down a colonial-era law that prescribed a maximum imprisonment of five years for adultery, which means extramarital affair is no longer a criminal offence in the country.
The court said the law deprived women of dignity and individual choice, and treated them as the property of men.
It emphasised that each partner to a marriage is equally responsible to keep the sanctity of marriage intact. However, the offence still remains a valid ground for divorce.
