During an awards acceptance speech on Friday night, actor Jim Carrey criticized President Donald Trump, accusing him of “kidnapping children.”
Carrey was being honored at the Britannia Awards in Los Angeles when he made that and several negative remarks about Trump.
“We need to be clear: Shamelessness is not, and will never be a superpower. It is the mark of a villain, kidnapping children is not what great nations do,” Carrey said, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
He was referring to the Trump’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy, which led to migrant families being separated at the border.
The policy dictated that adults found crossing the border illegally face criminal instead of civil prosecution, and their children were taken into custody by U.S. officials and put in foster care. Trump signed an executive order halting the separations after facing widespread criticism.
Carrey continued with the jokes intended to make a point against the president.
“One half of America at this moment believes there is a sinister deep state diabolically plotting, to what? Give them healthcare?” Carrey said.
The actor dedicated the award to Charlie Chaplin, whom he considered a role model, as well as people who have sought to bring down the president—Trump dossier author Christopher Steele, Christine Blasey Ford (who accused Trump’s Supreme Court pick Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault), football player Colin Kaepernick and actor Robert De Niro, who was one of more than ten people targeted with mailed pipe bombs earlier in the week.
Carrey also joked about the pipe bombs, which were directed at Democrats and Trump critics.
Federal authorities on Friday arrested a suspect, Cesar Sayoc, in connection with the pipe bombs and found he had a history of supporting Trump and bashing CNN and Democrats who have scrutinized the president.
“Yes, I no longer have packages delivered to my home in the great America fashioned in the last couple of years. I don’t ever remember it being this great, actually,” he said.
Apart from comedy, Carrey’s has expressed his dislike for Trump through making cartoons.
On Thursday, he tweeted a cartoon of a pipe bomb in Trump’s mouth.
“Today they tried to murder two Presidents as well as public servants and journalists. Make no mistake, these terrorists were encouraged and emboldened by the hate speech of Donald Trump,” Carrey tweeted. “If you can’t see the clear menace of this man’s influence by now then you are a part of it.”
