Real Madrid were eliminated from the Copa del Rey quarter-finals after a shock 2-1 defeat by Leganés at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium on Wednesday.
Playing without Cristiano Ronaldo and other regular starters, Madrid were unable to defend their 1-0 win from the first leg, crashing out on the away goals rule after a 2-2 draw on aggregate. Leganés scored with a long-range shot by Javi Eraso in the 31st minute.
Karim Benzema equalized from inside the area early in the second half and Gabriel Pires netted the winner for the visitors with a 55th-minute header.
The home crowd loudly jeered Madrid after the loss, which again leaves coach Zinedine Zidane and his players under pressure in what has been a disappointing season.
It’s the second consecutive year that Madrid have been eliminated in the Copa quarter-finals, having lost to Celta Vigo last season. Leganés was playing in the last eight of the competition for the first time in the team’s 89-year history.
